Football Notes
On Sunday April 22, 2013 Haynes Academy senior-to-be, Dylan Scheuerich competed in the Taylor Mehlhaff Southern Regional Football Kicking Showcase held at Zachary High School.
With 20-plus college and high school kickers entered, Scheuerich won the last-man-standing competition. In the competition was Tulane University kicker Cairo Santos who was last season’s Lou Groza award winner.
The Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award has become the most prestigious college football award for kickers.
In Janurary, Scheuerich competed in the Chris Sailer National Kicking event held at UNLV. This event was sponsored by NIKE.

GAME NOTES
Friday Nov. 2, 2012: Ashton Morris’ 51-yard touchdown run, with 2:21 remaining in the game, gave Haynes the lead and the Yellowjackets held on to defeat the Gators, 37-33, Friday night in a non-district game at Clark Field in Lafayette.
Morris finished with 21 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jared Smith had 94 yards and Hayden Chighizola 95 yards rushing. Chighizola had a 30-yard touchdown run and Smith a 1-yard touchdown run.
Out scored 20-0 in the third and trailing by 19, Haynes (5-4) rallied back and held Ascension Episcopal scoreless in the fourth. The Yellowjackets scored 23 points in the final 11 minutes en route to their victory.
Within a 27-hour period, two of Haynes’ athletic teams scored big time victories. On Thursday Haynes defeated Berwich in a bi-district Louisiana High School Athletic Association Volleyball playoff game. On Friday, the football team came away with its hard fought come-from-behind victory.

Thursday Oct. 25, 2012: Senior running back Nate Frye had 183 yards rushing and scored three rushing touchdowns as Houma Christian defeated Haynes, 47-31, in a non district game at Joe Yenni Stadium.
Frye had an 11 yard touchdown reception for the Warriors first score. Leading 41-31 with Haynes driving and three minutes remaining in the game, Frye had an 80-yard interceptionreturn for a touchdown to seal the victory.
Haynes was able to keep up with the Warriors, however two early fumbles hurt. Both fumbles led to led to Houma touchdowns and gave the Warriors a 27-10 lead.
Jared Smith led the Yellowjackets with 92 yards rushing, including a 39 yard touchdown run. Smith had a 38 yard touchdown pass to Nick DeVeer and finished with 97 yards passing.
Ashton Morris had 75 yards rushing and Hayden Chighizola 43. Morris had a four-yard touchdown run and Chighizola a 10-yard touchdown run.
Dylan Scheuerich had a 45-yard field goal early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 13-10.Friday Oct. 19, 2012: Ashton Morris had a 4-yard touchdown run on third down and Haynes held on to defeat St. Martin's, 21-14, in overtime at Tony Porter Stadium Friday night.
The Yellowjackets (4-3) had possession first in the overtime and two running plays netted six yards to set up Morris' winning score. Following Morris' touchdown and Dylan Scheuerich's successful point-after kick, Haynes' defense took over and secured the victory.
Colin Hansen was thrown for a two-yard loss on first and Hunter Rodriguez was able to gain one on second down. A five-yard penalty pushed the ball back to the Haynes 16. On third and fourth downs, Rodriguez faced a strong pass rush and had two incompletion to end the game.
Morris finished with 23 carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Hayden Chighizola had seven rushes for 85 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown run.
Thursday Oct. 11, 2012: Haynes scored two touchdowns on its first three offensive plays en route to a 48-6 non-district victory over Ecole at Joe Yenni Stadium Thursday night.
Junior running back Ashton Morris led the Yellow Jackets with 87 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. Hayden Chighizola added 48 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Chighizola also had a 65-yard touchdown pass reception from Jared Smith for the Jackets’ (3-3) first score. Haynes held the Spartans to 164 yards rushing.
The final two touchdowns of the first half came courtesy of junior linebacker Michael Bossier. Bossier’s first touchdown came as a high snap sailed over the Ecole punter’s head and into the end zone where Bossier recovered it. On the next Ecole drive, Nick DeVeer blocked a punt which spun up into the air and landed in Bossier’s hands. He returned it 35 yards to set the halftime score at 41-6.
Reserve running, Logan Murillo had a 34-yard touchdown run in the third period for Haynes final score.
Friday Oct. 5, 2012: Quarterback Jared Smith rushed for 154 yards and running back Ashton Morris had 142 yards as Haynes (2-3) snapped a three game losing streak with a 33-8 victory over Crescent City Friday at Muss Bertolino.
Smith had touchdown runs of 28 and 14 yards. Morris, who had 90 yards rushing in the first half, had only three carries in the second including a 36-yard touchdown run.
Running back Hayden Chighizola had a 17-yard touchdown run and finished with 44 yards rushing. Chighizola had two pass receptions for 28 yards.
Thursday Sept. 27, 2012: A solid running attack combined with four lost fumbles by Haynes helped lead Country Day past the Yellow Jackets, 21-0 Thursday night at Joe Yenni Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets did get a good rushing performance from Ashton Moriiss who finished with 87 yards on 15 carries. Hayden Chighizola finished with 13 carries for 65 yards.
Mann led the Cajuns, going 11-of-15 for 115 yards and a touchdown passing while rushing for 15 yards and a score. Andrew Kern carried 18 times for 70 yards
Friday Sept. 21, 2012: Two long touchdown passes plus a botched punt attempt by Haynes led to three touchdowns as Thomas Jefferson defeated Haynes, 19-16, in the Magnet bowl Friday night at Hoss Memtsas Stadium.
Following a Jaguar score in the first period, Haynes (1-2) responded with a seven play, 57 yard drive to take the lead. Ashton Morris capped the drive with a three yard touchdown run With with Dylan Scheuerich's kick the Yellowjackets led 7-6 with 2:59 left in the first.
On the final play of the first half, Scheuerich kicked a 37 yard field goal to push the lead to 10-6.
Trailing 19-10 with 2:41 remaining in the game, Haynes took advantage of a Jaguar turnover and gained possession at the Jags eight. Two plays later, Jared Smith scored on a quarterback keeper, however the point-after failed and the Jackets trailed by three with 1:59 left.
Haynes would get the ball again with 12 seconds remaining and no timeouts left. After gaining nothing on first, Haynes lined up to attempt a 61-yard field goal. However, Scheuerich's attempt fell five yards short as time ran out.
Friday Sept. 14, 2012: Fisher capitalized on numerous miscues by Haynes (1-1) in the final three quarters en route to a, 37-9, non district game at Bess P. Harvey Memorial Stadium in Lafitte.
Haynes first scored came midway in the third period when Dylan Scheurich kicked a 46-yard field goal.
The game was stopped with 2:10 remaining in the final quarter following a Haynes 1-yard touchdown run by Hayden Chighizola. As Chighizola crossed the goal line the officials signaled a score. Seconds later all the stadium lights went out as well as all the lights through out the entire town of Lafitte.
Following a brief discussion all parties agreed to call the game at that point
Friday Sept. 7, 2012: Jared Smith, Ashton Morris and Hayden Chighizola scored two touchdowns each as Haynes defeated Mount Hermon, 40-18, Friday night.
The Jackets final score came when Chighizola returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
